How it generally works

India's labour laws have been consolidated into four labour codes — on wages, industrial relations, social security, and occupational safety and health — together with continuing laws and state rules. Which provisions apply depends on the type of establishment and the employee's role and pay.

Disputes involving workmen are generally decided by labour courts and industrial tribunals. Managerial and supervisory employees usually rely on their contract and the civil courts.

Government employees have separate service rules and forums.
