The Indian Express reported that the court of the Principal Judge, Family Court (Headquarters) at Delhi's Dwarka Court complex had been vacant for nearly four months after the presiding judge's transfer in January. More than 2,000 cases — including mutual-consent divorces, maintenance, guardianship and execution matters — were reported to be pending before that court, with other family courts carrying heavy lists of their own.

Advocate Pravesh Dabas said that litigants and lawyers were receiving only dates, even where the relief sought was urgent. In some matters where the parties had already settled, he said, the decree of divorce by mutual consent could not be granted because of the vacancy, causing anxiety to the litigants.

The report also described how principal judge posts in Delhi are filled from the seniority list of the Delhi Higher Judicial Service.
